Star Fox 64 3D is the 2011 Nintendo 3DS remake of Star Fox 64, released worldwide between September 9 and September 14, 2011. Star Fox 64 3D rebuilt the 1997 classic from the ground up with new HD-era textures, stereoscopic 3D depth, gyro-based aiming, and a re-recorded voice track — all while preserving the original missions, branching paths, and medal requirements exactly. Until Star Fox 2026 arrives on Switch 2, Star Fox 64 3D is the most polished way to play the SF64 campaign.
Star Fox 64 3D is faithful by design — there are no story changes, no additional missions, and no rebalanced bosses. What changes is presentation:
Star Fox 64 3D is the cleanest faithful remake Nintendo has ever produced for any series. The mission structure, Branching paths, and medal counts are identical to the N64 original. The only meaningful gameplay difference is the optional gyro aim, which makes a few of Star Fox 64's harder boss patterns easier — purists can disable it for a true-to-original experience.
The 2026 Switch 2 remake (Star Fox 2026) is the spiritual successor to Star Fox 64 3D — same philosophy, much bigger budget. If you have a Switch 2, Star Fox 2026 supersedes Star Fox 64 3D for almost all purposes. If you're stuck on a 3DS or prefer handheld play with stereoscopic depth, Star Fox 64 3D remains a great option. Read the SF64 vs 2026 comparison.
Star Fox 64 3D was very well received (Metacritic ~81), praised especially for the gyro implementation and 3D effect. Some critics felt that releasing what was essentially a 14-year-old game at launch price was a tough sell, but for newcomers the 3DS version was, for many years, the best way to play any Star Fox game.
